Geological risks comprise the various dangers and hazards to both resources and human activities that result from geologic processes, including both natural and anthropogenic processes as possible sources. There may be unpopulated areas hard hit by catastrophic geological events that are not considered subject to geological risks: i.e. geological risk is an economic parameter measured by quantifying the losses resulting from a specific event.
Geological risk planning involves the development of measures to deal with the damage arising from geological risks and consists of identifying, predicting, preventing and correcting said risks.
It is often not possible to reduce the danger of a natural risk, but precautions should be taken to minimize the consequences.
Among the geological risks which occur most frequently and which can be analysed it is worth mentioning: earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, rock falls, floods and subsidence.
